Tertre Rôteboeuf 1998 is a full-bodied, Merlot-based red wine from the St-Emilion appellation of Bordeaux. Le Tertre Rôteboeuf is one of the unsung stars of St-Émilion often overlooked in favour of its more glamorous neighbours, yet since 1989, this 6ha estate has been producing some of the appellation’s finest wines. On the 1998. "This warm vintage saw an extended winemaking period, reflecting the extremely ripe fruits, and took even longer than the 2009 to be fully fermented dry. At this point it is bursting with soft tobacco, crushed roses, white truffles and campfire smoke, with waves of kirsch cherry and clove. Natural yeast fermentation, exuberant with layers of fresh oyster shell salinity, not without faults but that is part of the charm. 100% new oak." Jane Anson, 2023
The 1998 Le Tertre-Rôteboeuf is a vintage that I had not encountered for a number of years. It has a straightforward bouquet that perhaps does not quite exploit a benevolent Right Bank season like recent vintage - this more conservative with strict blackberry, briary and undergrowth scents. Yet it begins to unfurl with aeration to reveal scent of dried rose petals, Seville orange marmalade and even a hint of gingerbread. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, a little drier in the mouth than I expected with a structured finish that just needs a little more fruit. As much as I love the wines from this Saint-Émilion estate, the 1998 has never been a vintage that I have warmed to since first tasting it in 2004 and at twenty years later it is something I cannot warm to. Tasted at the château. - Neil Martin - The 1998 Le Tertre-Rôteboeuf is a vintage that I had not encountered for a number of years.
