Stauning Whisky Smoke

HED41099 70cl 47%
Stauning Smoke is a mildly smoked single malt whisky made in Denmark from pure West Jutland malt barley, smoked over locally harvested peat and heather. The nose resembles a gentle bonfire smoke blending with notes of citrus and honey. As for the palate, expect a rich taste of tobacco, nuts, vanilla and fresh herbs.

Stauning

The first and whisky distillery in Denmark, Stauning was established by a group of local single malt enthusiasts in 2005. The group embarked on their distillery venture with the aim of producing peated single malt in the style of Islay. After a very promising start to life, including a steady stream of awards and a favourable comparison of its new make to that of Islay’s Ardbeg by whisky critic Jim Murray, Stauning dramatically increased its production in 2016.

Since its first distillation, Stauning has committed to using only traditional methods of production: using only locally sourced barley and rye, which is floor-malted on-site, and distilling exclusively with custom-made, direct-fired pot stills. The distillery’s three main product lines are split into Traditional, Peated and Rye styles. Ageing is typically in ex-Bourbon and new virgin American white oak casks, with finishing done in a variety of more experimental cask types – mezcal, Cognac, calvados, Moscatel, Madeira and vermouth casks have been used. Widely regarded as one of the most exciting new entrants into the world of premium whisky, Stauning is a name to be remembered by those in search of an alternative dram.
