The E. Guigal Saint-Joseph Blanc Lieu Dit 2023 is a focused white wine from the esteemed Saint-Joseph appellation in the Northern Rhône Valley, primarily composed of Marsanne and Roussanne grapes. Guigal`s expertise, although renowned for red wines, extends into crafting nuanced whites, demonstrating skill in blending and terroir expression. The 2023 growing season benefited from ideal conditions, yielding grapes that achieved optimal ripeness while maintaining acidity. This wine features fermentation in stainless steel and oak, allowing the minerality of the granite soils to emerge alongside subtle floral and stone fruit notes, contributing to a structured and age-worthy profile.
Bottled just two weeks before my visit, the 2023 Saint-Joseph Blanc Lieu-Dit matches the outstanding quality of the 2022 I tasted last year. Raised partially in new oak and second-fill French oak barriques, the 2023 radiates fragrant lemon peel, yellow apple, toast, white flowers and a touch of quince. Full-bodied, round and concentrated, the sublime 2023 draws to a close with substantial freshness on the complex finish. Enjoy it right out of the gate.

E. Guigal

E. Guigal

Founded in the village of Ampuis by Etienne Guigal in 1946, Domaine Guigal is one of the most revered and unwaveringly consistent estates in the Rhône Valley, and is often seen as a benchmark for Côte-Rôtie Syrah. A pioneer of the single-vineyard concept in this appellation Guigal is best known for its top three wines, known affectionately as the ‘La-Las’, which is short for La Landonne, La Mouline and La Turque – the domaine’s top Syrah vineyards .

Other notable vineyards of this 75-hectare estate include La Doriane (the source of Guigal’s Condrieu), Ex-Voto (used for Hermitage) and Vignes de l’Hospice (the source of one of Guigal’s top St-Joseph Syrahs). All of these have become benchmark wines of their respective appellations. The Crozes-Hermitage appellation completes the roster of Northern Rhône estate vineyards.

Since 2006, Guigal has made a substantial investment in appellations of the Southern Rhône, using top-quality purchased fruit from trusted growers in Châteaneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Tavel and the Côtes du Rhône.
