Screaming Eagle is perhaps the most famous California Cult winery of all time and produces one of the most sought-after wines in the world. Sourced from a small, 57-acre vineyard in Oakville, Napa, production of this exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend is supremely limited and older vintages are increasingly rare. The 2008 release is a compellingly seductive and silky wine, with endlessly complex layers of crème de cassis, dark chocolate, spring flowers, liquorice and sweet spices. Though perfectly in its drinking window, this will still evolve for another 8-10 years.
The estate`s 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon bursts from the glass with considerable richness and pure depth. The spring frosts lowered yields noticeably resulting in a wine that is a bit darker and heavier than is the norm. The rest of the vintage was on the warmer side, which gave the wine much of its ripeness and body. Mocha, espresso, licorice and sweet spices all wrap around the palate. Next to the other wines in this tasting, the 2008 is a bit burly. The mind-bending finesse of the best vintages is missing. - Antonio Galloni

Screaming Eagle

Screaming Eagle

An almost mythical name in the wine world, particularly among connoisseurs of fine Californian Cabernet Sauvignon. Screaming Eagle had relatively modest beginnings - in the early 1990s, grape grower Jean Philips decided to ask Robert Mondavi to taste her homemade Cabernet Sauvignon. Mondavi was so enamoured with the dense, full-flavoured Cabernet Sauvignon she presented that he encouraged her to bottle it as soon as possible. The high quality of the wine, perfect scores from critics and tiny production meant it swiftly became the holy grail for American wine collectors.

The Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard at Screaming Eagle benefits from a rocky substrate and excellent drainage and exposure. The result is fruit that gets plenty of sun to ripen, but a cooling northerly breeze courtesy of the San Pablo Bay. The wines are made in a bold, rich, unapologetically Californian style. Blackcurrent, cigar box, blackerries and violets abound on the nose while the tannins are soft and fine-grained. The estate also produce a second wine, "Second Flight" and a tiny amount Sauvignon Blanc.
