Domaine Leroy was formed by Lalou Bize-Leroy in 1988 by purchasing the estates of Charles Noëllat in Vosne-Romanée and Philippe-Rémy in Gevrey-Chambertin. After continuous and strategic expansion, today the estate consists of approximately 23 hectares, including impressive holdings in nine Grands Crus and eight Premier Crus. It is the 2nd largest owner of Romanée-Saint-Vivant with 0.99 hectares of vines. The holdings include 2 plots located just across the road from the vineyard of Les Suchots. This release is from the successful 1991 vintage, a year that gave wines of strength and depth and significant ageing potential.
The 1991 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is a spellbinding achievement from Lalou Bize-Leroy. Hitherto I had only tasted it once before, when I described it as a “Pandora’s box,” and that description is apt here. The crystalline, harmonious bouquet, featuring intense black and red fruit, damp undergrowth and shucked oyster shells, is one of the most complex and compelling that I have ever encountered from the domaine. The palate displays astonishing balance, so fresh and brimming with vim and vigor that you cannot believe it is already some 26 years old. Blind, I was convinced this was in fact from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. It is a fabulous, disarming and quite bewitching elixir that will continue to drink well for many years. Showstopping! 2,044 bottles produced. Tasted at the DRC/Leroy comparative dinner in Hong Kong. - Neil Martin

Domaine Leroy

Domaine Leroy

The Leroy name is a key pillar of the Burgundian wine scene and a leading light in the Côte d'Or, with three main strands: Domaine Leroy, Maison Leroy and Domaine d'Auvenay (a small, biodynamically farmed Domaine founded by Lalou in 1988).

In 1988, recognising the trend towards domaine bottling in Burgundy, Lalou Bize-Leroy purchased what would become Domaine Leroy: an estate situated in Vosne-Romanée (previously known by the name Domaine Noëllat). Domaine Leroy labelled wines are thus are produced from parcels of grapes grown on the 22ha of domaine-owned Côte d'Or vineyards, which span nine different Grand Crus. These wines are produced biodynamically and at extremely low yields, resulting in superbly concentrated expressions of the Burgundian terroir.
