Romanée-Saint-Vivant
Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France
The Grand Cru climat of Romanée-Saint-Vivant is located immediately below Richebourg and Romanée-Conti in the hallowed Pinot Noir-producing village of Vosne-Romanée (to which the climat is adjacent) in Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits. Exclusively devoted to red wines and with a relatively high density of clay in its stony soils, it produces some of the softest and most perfumed Pinot Noirs of any Vosne Grand Cru.
Romanée-Saint-Vivant takes its name from the 10th-century monastery of Saint Vivant, whose monks originally tended the vines here. As in Richebourg and nearby Echézeaux, the largest area of the 9.4ha Romanée-Saint-Vivant is owned by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti; the remainder atomised under the ownership of a large number of domaines.
While often overshadowed Richebourg and Romanée-Conti, the wines of Romanée-Saint-Vivant enjoy a loyal following among lovers of the more filigree expressions of Burgundy Pinot Noir.
