Château Pavie 2012 is a full-bodied red wine from the revered property of Château Pavie in the St-Emilion appellation of Bordeaux. Pavie is widely regarded as possessing one of Bordeaux’s greatest terroirs. Largely limestone and clay soils, excellent drainage and a sun-catching southerly exposure all contribute to this. Pavie`s grand vin is typically a blend of 55% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and is aged in 80-100% new oak barriques for 18 months. The 2012 is the first since the property was promoted to the rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé B. "Pavie is a wine that it really isn`t worth approaching before the 10 year window - not just because under its then-regime, everything was turned up to the max, but because this is a powerful terroir that delivers muscular wines. It`s beginning to relax, if displaying waves of gunsmoke and rubber reduction aromatics at first. Once it unwinds in the glass, you get grilled sandalwood and cloves alongside liquorice bud, black cherry, raspberry and cassis fruits. The limestone influence with its mouthwatering salinity and saffron is kicking in and this has character and tension.
The 2012 Pavie has a lovely bouquet, one of the best on the Right Bank, with gorgeous brambly red fruit, fig and black truffle, developing a Left Bank like personality with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a vibrant entry, nicely poise and focused, touches of pencil lead threaded through the red fruit with a nicely structured finish. Very seductive. Tasted twice at Bordeaux Index`s Ten Year-On tasting and blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting. - Neil Martin

Chateau Pavie

Chateau Pavie

Situated to the south-east of the town of St-Emilion, Pavis is the largest 1er Grand Cru Classé property in the commune with over 35 hectares of vines. The vineyards themselves are ideally situated on the south facing slopes of a limestone plateau for excellent exposure, ensuring optimal ripeness in the right conditions. Since the late 1990s, the Grand Vin has been a blend of 55% Merlot, 25% Cabernet France and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented in wooden vats and aged in 100% new oak for 18 months. The wines are bottled unfiltered for added concentration and texture.

Pavie was purchased in 1998 by Gérard Perse who has, assisted by consultant oenologist Michel Rolland, pushed the wines towards a bolder, more concentrated style with a focus on concentrated fruit on the palate and an expressive nose.
