The 2019 Pape Clément has a lot of intensity on the nose, although the new oak is more prominent here compared to the Domaine de Chevalier. Still, there is admirable delineation and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet `n sour entry, grainy tannins, black truffle and soy. Quite intense and assertive on the finish. This will require 3-5 years in bottle and will doubtless deserve a higher score. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. - Neil Martin
With a rich history that spans seven centuries, Château Pape Clément is one of the oldest Grands Crus in the entire Bordeaux region. The first vines were planted in the 13th century by Bertrand de Goth, who went on to become Pope Clement V. Situated in the Pessac-Léognan appellation in Graves, the 36-hectare estate is on a combination of gravel-sand and clay-limestone soils, with a chalky subsoil rich in iron. This latest release from the 2019 vintage is made up of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot, harvested between the 18th September and 8th October. It is a perfectly balanced wine, with tantalising notes of crème de cassis, graphite, liquorice and tobacco.
