Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Montrachet 2006 is a full-bodied Burgundy white wine from the Grand Cru climat of Montrachet in the Côte de Beaune. An owner of domaines including Domaine Marquis de Laguiche and the monopole of Clos des Mouches, as well as operating a hugely successful negociant business, the family-owned Drouhin is justly respected for producing such a diverse portfolio of Burgundy wines with such a clear signature of their terroir. "As good and refined as several of the foregoing wines are, this is the clear class of the cellar with moderate wood notes framing a fresh, intense and airy nose that sports impressive aromatic breadth while merging into exceptionally rich and intense full-bodied flavours that possess seemingly buckets of dry extract which gives the finish a textured and naturally sweet character. A wine of power yet excellent energy and focus and this too is both quite primary and youthfully austere at present. A potentially great Drouhin Montrachet." Burghound, 2008
The 2006 Montrachet Grand Cru immediately set off alarm bells due to the darker-than-expected color. Personally, I did not find this to be a case of premature oxidation, but just a wine that has matured too quickly and perhaps contained a little botrytis. Lemon curd, honey and melted butter on the slightly smudged nose. The palate is rich and decadent but missing a sense of precision and mineralité. A nice Chardonnay rather than a decent Montrachet. Admittedly, it does develop more breeding with aeration, but the finish seems more like a mature Chenin Blanc. Tasted at the Montrachet vertical in London. - Neil Martin
