Michel Niellon is one of the most revered producers in the Côte de Beaune. Operating out of tiny cellars in Chassagne-Montrachet, Michel and his son-in-law produce spectacular wines with just 6 hectares of old, low-yielding vines. Many would argue that their Bâtard-Montrachet is the jewel in the crown, with the 1996 coming from a parcel of just a few rows of vines around 50 years in age. It is rich, voluminous and powerful, offering up mature notes of honey-drizzled orchard fruits, dried apricot, citrus peel, almond paste and buttery pastry. Approaching its peak and perfectly ready to drink, this will perhaps not benefit from further cellaring.
