Leoville Poyferre (Mid-Shoulder) 1961

Château Léoville Poyferré 1961 (Mid-Shoulder) is a mature, Cabernet Sauvignon-based red wine from the St-Julien appellation of Bordeaux. The Second Growth property of Léoville Poyferré has been owned by the Cuvelier family since 1920 and is today managed by Sara Lecompte Cuvelier, who took over from her uncle, Didier Cuvelier, in 2017. Through modernisation of the wine cellar and a major programme of vineyard replanting and expansion, Didier significantly raised the reputation of Léoville Poyferré, which now enjoys the status of one of the finest – and best-value – properties in St-Julien. This 1961 bottling has a mid-shoulder fill level. "This remains a very commendable Leoville Poyferre that like the 1982, is equal to its supposed Saint Julien peers. A similar nose to that last bottle. high toned, exotic in comparison to other wines with dates, macerated cherries and raisins. Medium-bodied, opulent palate with a certain sappy quality to the texture. It lacks a little grip and length, almost flirting with volatility, but by the finish you cannot help being seduced by this rather ostentatious wine." Wine Advocate, 2007
