Over the last couple of decades, the illustrious 2ème Cru Classé property, Château Léoville Las Cases, has cemented its reputation as one of the most consistent producers of exceptional quality wines in the Pauillac appellation. The 1988 release is composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot.

Reviewed by the critic James Suckling as follows, `What a complex nose here with forest floor, bark, sliced wild mushrooms and tobacco. Full-bodied and round with very juicy, savory character. It is long and flavorful with leather, forest flowers and mushrooms at the end. Drinking wonderfully now.`

The 1988 Léoville Las-Cases is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot (this bottled had been re-corked at the property in 2014). This was a late harvest that began on 4 October and lasted for 12 days. This seems to have matured on the nose since I last tasted it in 2011, more secondary aromas - undergrowth, mushroom and hickory infusing the black fruit. It feels a little rustic now. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannin, a little dry in the mouth, the fruit having ebbed away in the last few years. I have fonder memories of this in the 1990s and 2000s. There is still a presence here but it feels as if it is drying out on the finish. I felt that this Second Growth was a little inconsistent around this era, especially compared to nowadays. Tasted at the château. - Neil Martin

Chateau Leoville Las Cases

Chateau Leoville Las Cases

The illustrious 2ème Cru Classé property, Château Léoville Las Cases, has cemented its reputation as one of the most consistent producers of exceptional quality wines in the Saint Julien appellation in Bordeaux. Spanning 98ha, the estate produces its celebrated first wine - a Cabernet Sauvignon dominant blend - in addition to a second wine from young vines, Le Petit Lion. These stellar reds are renowned for their structure and longevity and are produced from the beating heart of the estate, on deep, well-draining gravel soils.

Two further wines are made from a separate site, situated further back from the river with more sandy-gravels: Clos de Marquis and Petite Marquise. The key varietals that make up these powerful red wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
