The 1998 Latour-à-Pomerol does not quite punch at the level I expected. The decadent nose is glossy and verging on ostentation, offering fig, bilberry and black cherry aromas. Pomerol meets Napa? Latour-à-Pomerol would not be alone in channeling its inner California in this growing season. The palate has a core of red and black fruit alongside generous crème de cassis and blueberry fruit tones. Texturally, it is silky and sensual, though its lushness precludes delineation and precision toward the finish. Nevermind... it is a thoroughly enjoyable Latour-à-Pomerol, if not the most intellectual offering in recent years. Tasted at the Latour à Pomerol dinner at Taillevent in London.
