Lafite Rothschild 1952

HED65180 75cl 12.5%
Lafite Rothschild 1952 is a fully mature, Cabernet Sauvignon-based red wine from the illustrious Pauillac First Growth of Château Lafite Rothschild. Located at the northerly boundary of Pauillac, adjacent to Saint-Estèphe, the château vineyards are broadly split into two parcels - one which supplies the bulk of the grapes for the Grand Vin and a second parcel that is used to produce Carruades de Lafite. Vineyard plantings are around 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. On the fully mature 1952 grand vin. "Of two bottles, one tasted tired, but the other was smooth, deliciously complex, mature but still vibrant, with spicy, minty, cola aromas and smooth, elegant flavours.--Lafite Rothschild vertical." Wine Spectator, 1990
The 1952 Lafite-Rothschild has a straight-laced nose, like many Left Bank wines this vintage, "correct" and perhaps to some, "unexciting". I quite admire its reserve and classicism. Dried rose petals and sandalwood mixed with raspberry unfold with aeration. The palate is well balanced, with a graceful build in the mouth and a hint of allspice and bay leaf. It gains elegance with a cohesive, charming, piquant finish that doesn`t outstay its welcome. Lovely. Tasted at the Lafite-Rothschild vertical at Ami restaurant in Hong Kong. - Neil Martin - The 1952 Lafite Rothschild, the second time I have tasted it, is actually similar to the first one encountered in the same restaurant. There are light red fruit tones, scents of leather-bound books and a touch of Band-Aid here. It’s simple but definable as a Lafite. The palate is armed with a sweet core of fruit that’s a little soft with a touch of aniseed. This is elegant on the finish that just lacks a bit of structure and grip. On reflection, maybe the previous bottle was better last year. Tasted at Ami restaurant in Hong Kong.
