Jim and his wife Nancy laid the cornerstone for Jim Barry Wines when they acquired their first property in 1959, situated on the fringes of Clare Valley. Today, the estate boasts vineyards in both Clare Valley and Coonawarra, earning a solid reputation among critics and wine enthusiasts. Among their offerings, the single-vineyard Armagh Shiraz stands out, consistently receiving high praise from critics. The 2004 vintage is currently displaying its potential, with aromas of dark and blue fruits, earthy notes, dark chocolate, caramel, and a touch of cedar. It exhibits a savoury quality with high-quality fruit, and is now beginning to develop secondary characteristics, including hints of smoked cedar, mocha, and oak.
