Ichiro Akuto is a whisky-making legend of Japan – the man behind the iconic Chichibu distillery, whose whiskies have developed a cult following since the first release in 2011.
Ichiro, as he is affectionately referred to, established the Ichrio’s Malt brand in 2008. It specialised in blended whiskies and blended malts of rare precision and grace. Guided by an obsessive attention to detail, Ichiro has calibrated every aspect of his whisky production to his exacting standards.
The core products in the range are the leaf-decorated ‘pure malts’: the green-labelled Double Distilleries blend (a collaboration between Chichibu and Komagatake distilleries); the gold-labelled Mizunara Wood Reserve blended malt and the red-labelled Wine Wood Reserve (also a blended malt). Considerably more accessible than the intensely sought-after Chichibu and Hanyu malts, these whiskies nevertheless reveal why Ichiro Akuto is held in such reverence by whisky lovers across the globe.
