Named after Angelo Gaja’s granddaughter and mother, Gaia & Rey was first produced in 1983 and demonstrated the Langhe region could produce world class Chardonnay. It is a fine Piedmontese white wine in the mould of a white Burgundy. It is matured for six to eight months in 225l French oak barrels before bottling.

This Chardonnay showcases layers of apple, citrus, and tropical fruit alongside fine minerality and subtle oak influence. Gaja is renowned for its commitment to quality and innovation, leading the Italian wine industry since 1859.

- The 2013 Gaia & Rey is another step towards a more restrained style, partly because of the cool vintage and a move towards general brightness in the wines. Lemon peel, white pepper, pear and white peach notes abound in a beautifully layered, vibrant Chardonnay from Gaja. Over the last few months the 2013 has begun to open up nicely. The main vineyard for the Chardonnay is a historic plot in Treiso that is now augmented by a steeper site in Serralunga.

Gaja

The Gaja Winery was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja and has been owned and operated by five generations of the Gaja family. One of Italy’s most renowned and dynamic wineries, Gaja first established its world-class reputation with the powerful reds it produced in the region of Piemonte in Northwestern Italy.

A key figure was Angelo Gaja, who took over the running of the estate in 1970 and sought to showcase the best that the Nebbiolo grape could produce with stellar Barolo and Barbaresco wines. The estate produces unique white wines too, such as the marvellous single varietal Sauvignon Blanc, Alteni di Brassica.

Gaja is also a leading name in Tuscany, having diversified into the production of Brunello and Super Tuscan wines. The Gaja family have owned the Pieve Santa Restituta estate since 1994 from which they produce two single-vineyard Brunello di Montalcino wines, Rennina and Sugarille. In 1996, Angelo Gaja purchased the Ca’Marcanda estate in Bolgheri.
