Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon 1998 is a full-bodied, single-vineyard Syrah red wine from the Hermitage appellation of the Northern Rhône Valley. The Chapoutier winery founded in 1808 by the Calvet family was sold to the Chapoutier family in 1855. It has since become one of the biggest companies in the Rhône Valley both as a producer and a négociant, with activity across all of the major appellations. On the 1998 Le Pavillon. "The 1998 Ermitage Le Pavillon flirts with perfection ... again. Revealing a striking bouquet of violets, blackberries, smoke, liquorice, and minerals, it is luxuriously rich, full-bodied, and layered on the palate. It is a wine with a finish that lasts beyond a minute. Remarkably, yields were a mere 10 hectoliters per hectare. There is plenty of tannin in the finish, but it is ripe and well-integrated. Anticipated maturity. 2010-2050." Robert Parker, 2001

M. Chapoutier

M. Chapoutier

One of the oldest producers in the Rhône Valley, M. Chapoutier was established in 1808. The arrival of a young Michel Chapoutier, who took over management of the family domaine in 1990, saw huge changes and a renewed drive for excellence, focussing especially on the diverse terroir of the Rhône. Michel has embraced biodynamic practices in recent years and attributes much of the increase in quality to this approach. The wines are generous and fruit-forward at the entry level, moving towards the sublime as we move up the quality ladder.

Two of the greatest wines in the portfolio are 'De L'Orée', an Hermitage Blanc made from 100% Marsanne and 'Le Pavillon', a full-bodied, expressive Hermitage rouge that effortlessly rubs shoulders with the world's greatest Syrah.
