Mullineux Iron Syrah 2020 is a full-bodied, single-vineyard Syrah red wine produced in the Swartland region of South Africa. Mullineux Wines is one of the stand-out producers in South Africa`s Swartland region. The Iron Syrah comes from a single plot of dryfarmed Syrah bush vines planted on the iron-rich `koffieklip` soils west of Malmesbury. This terroir produces broad, full-bodied red wines. The 2020 wine was fermented with whole bunches and matured in 50% new French oak barrels for 12 months. "The 2020 Iron Syrah is firm with a youthful grip and offers aromas of crushed red berries as explosive florals erupt from the glass. This is instantly the champion of the soil series range this year. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is electric in the mouth and jumps to life as it excites the palate with precision, complexity and finesse. It explodes with beauty and balance and continues to reveal its secrets over the long, lingering, ever-evolving finish. Absolutely stellar!" Wine Advocate, 2022
- The 2020 Syrah Iron has a very focused bouquet, and yes, that ferrous element underlies what are quite precise black fruit scents, hints of bilberry and a light marine influence developing with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a sappy entry, maybe a little more reduced than either the Granite or Schist; the finish is more backward and broody at the moment. Just needs a little more charm to develop.
