Dry River was established in 1979 by Dr Neil and Dawn McCallum and was one of Martinborough’s first wineries. Dry River strives to harvest the Pinot Gris grapes late, leaving them to hang this fruit deep into autumn in order to be rewarded with a wide array of aromas and an intricate texture, without the need for winemaker artefact. The 2016 vintage is initially a bit shy, but progressively the complexities start to become evident.
Kiwi fruit, rock melon and white flesh stone-fruit together with a stewed rhubarb character. Spiced complexity of bay leaf, cardamom and caraway seed add further interest together with hints of vanilla. The wine appears drier than previous releases; the residual sugar is approximately 20 g/l, which might be thanks to the interplay with a fresh acidity and the drying effect of the mid palate phenolics. Beautifully oily on the palate, the alcohol supplies buoyancy, length and unity.
