Pinot Gris

Darling of Alsace

Pinot Gris is the French name for the variety also known as Pinot Grigio, and the key region is Alsace, which produces beautifully full-bodied expressions of the varietal at a range of sweetness levels from dry through to sweet. Typically characterised by tropical fruit character (banana, melon) with wonderful ginger spice and honeyed complexity. Key producers to look out for include the age-worthy and late harvest styles of Domaine Zind Humbrecht and the richly concentrated, sweet Pinot Gris from Domaine Weinbach and Hugel & Fils. Made from late-harvested botrytised grapes, such styles are known as ‘SGNs’ (Selection de Grains Nobles).
