The book is a celebration of the beauty and diversity of wine, and it explores a wide range of topics, from the history of winemaking to the philosophy of wine tasting. The title of the book is a reference to the Norse goddesses of war and death, the Valkyries. Jefford uses the Valkyries as a metaphor for the power of wine to transport us to other worlds and to awaken our senses.
