Dog Point Chardonnay 2021 is a medium-bodied white wine from the Marlborough region of New Zealand. Dog Point was established in the early 2000s by Ivan Sutherland and James Healy who had previously worked together at Cloudy Bay. Produced from organically farmed Chardonnay grapes, this 2021 iteration was pressed straight into barrels (10% new), where it was matured for 18 months. "Aromas of Meyer lemon, yellow apple, and acacia were followed by sea shell, cheese rind, and a hint of hay and button mushroom. Medium-bodied, refreshing acidity. Zesty layers with fascinating complexity." James Suckling, 2023
The 2021 Chardonnay is a punchy little number with vim and vigor. It offers sweetness of fruit that comes with a bracing, bright, citrus-like acidity, creating firmness on the finish. This effect is the result of the high incidence of shot berries, which is a trait of the Mendoza clone and was particularly prevalent in 2021. It underwent 100% wild fermentation in barrel (10% new oak) before spending 18 months on lees. This results in croissant-like characters alongside sweet, white stone fruit and citrus flavors.
