Deanston
Deanston distillery actually started life as a cotton mill in the late 1700s. It wasn't until 1966 that it was converted to the production of single malt Scotch. Located around eight miles from Stirling on the river Teith, the distillery features an on-site hydro-energy facility, making it one of the only distilleries in the world to be self-sufficient in electricity.
The distillery team favour lower gravity worts, long fermentations and slow distillation, aiming for a fuller, waxier style of single malt - similar to that which made the distillery's name in the 1960s and 70s. Deanston use organic barley for their single malt and the whisky is bottled without chill-filtration or the addition of colouring. Around 85% of the distillery's output is used in blended malts while just 15% is bottled as single malt, very occasionally under the brand Glen Ardoch.
