Cuva Vella Moscatel 1980

This is an unusual fortified wine from Viticultores de San Juan made from 100% Moscatel. As the story goes, 1980 was an exceptional year for Moscatel and a decision was taken to keep a vat of the wine for extended maturation. Somehow, the 50,000-litre chestnut wood vat went forgotten in a far corner of the winery and was only discovered more recently when it had to be dismantled and moved to an alternative location. 2,000 half-litre bottles were filled and the remainder was used to start a solera, from which a blended, non-vintage bottling will be created.

Tasting this wine in 2015, Luis Gutierrez described it as having “a mahogany colour and notes of curry” and “roasted chestnuts, while keeping the core of orange-driven, typica Muscat aromas.”
