The Premier and Grand Cru wines under the Maison Henri Boillot label are sourced from single-vineyard plots with single owners to preserve the authenticity of the site. Still in its prime youth, the 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru shows an expressive nose combining pink grapefruit, mandarin peel and some peppery notes. The palate is dense and elegant, with a distinctive salinity.
The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has an attractive bouquet with melted candle wax, yellow plum and lanolin aromas. I appreciate the typicité in this Corton Charlemagne, and it is well-defined. It`s one of the most intellectual aromatics that you have to sit and ponder. The palate is taut and fresh. There`s a clever reduction at play here, tensile with a judicious pinch of ginger. This feels animated and supremely well-focused on the finish. Overall, the 2020 is an accomplished and satisfying Corton-Charlemagne. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. - Neil Martin

Henri Boillot

Henri Boillot

In some ways, Henri Boillot has one foot in the past and one in the present. His family domaine, which he manages with his son Guillaume, has a history dating back to the 1880s, but the wines produced from their Meursault-based winery are undeniably modern, approachable and ranked among some of the very best in the region. Alongside operating a highly successful négociant business, the Boillot family own around 14 hectares of vineyards in the Côte de Beaune including a Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru monopole in the form of Clos de la Mouchère.

The winery don't shy away from the use of new oak and any overtly woody character is generally well balanced by ripe fruit. The Chardonnays range from citrus driven and fresher at the villages level all the way to ripe, tropical and creamy at the Grand Cru level. The reds are lighter and more elegant than they used to be with Henri's son Guillaume preferring a less extracted style of Pinot Noir.
