Corton-Charlemagne
Côte de Beaune, Burgundy, France
Corton-Charlemagne is a Grand Cru for white wines on the higher part of the historic hill of Corton in the Côte de Beaune region of Burgundy.
Corton-Charlemagne is a very large Grand Cru – more than 57ha since 1943, when it was substantially enlarged. This large size generates a huge variability of terroir. The most full-bodied and amplified wines come from the south-facing slopes of the vineyard in plots closer to Aloxe-Corton.
Both reds and whites can be produced in the appellation, which is divided between two lieux-dits – En Charlemagne and Le Charlemagne, which comprise about half of the appellation – along with seven other vineyards. The white wines of Corton-Charlemagne are renowned for their power, muscularity and refinement.
