Cornell Estate is a winery located in the Mayacamas Mountains AVA, just west of the Spring Mountain District AVA. The estate was founded in 2001 by Henry and Vanessa Cornell, who purchased a plot of rugged, untamed ground and returned the rolling hillsides to vineyard. Opening with aromas of blackberry, black currant, cardamom, and violets, the 2018 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon sets an enticing stage. The wine, characterized by its cassis hue, showcases a refined structure and a seamless integration of minerality. Reflecting its mountain origins, it offers a diverse range of flavours, including summer cherry, hints of dried mint, the earthiness of river rock, and a touch of espresso on the palate.
The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is elegant and nuanced from the very first taste. Over the last year, the 2018 has developed from a powerhouse into a much more refined wine. There is plenty of mountain tannin and structure, but those elements are completely enrobed by the fruit. Hints of iron, cedar, dried herbs, mint and sweet red cherry fruit emerge with a bit of time in the glass. The 2018 is a very rare, quintessentially elegant mountain Cabernet. Best of all, the 2018 won`t take years to come together. I would drink it ahead of the 2016 or 2017, but if opened young it needs several hours of aeration. - Antonio Galloni
