Clos des Papes, run by successive generations of the Avril family, has a long and illustrious history of producing exceptional quality wine in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Though 90% of production is red, 10% is reserved for white wine, the debut of the ‘Blanc’ in 1955. It is a blend of equal parts Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Bourboulenc and Picpoul, vinified and aged in stainless steel for 6 months. The 2016 is medium-bodied and richly flavoured but exhibits admirable freshness and a reassuring pep of acidity. It is stone and citrus fruit driven with lovely blossom and fennel frond aromatic inflections to give added intrigue and lift. A delicious wine paired with meaty white fish cooked over fire.
