The Chablis Grand Cru Valmur Domaine Jean-Paul & Benoît Droin 2023 is a highly anticipated white wine from one of Chablis` most respected producers. The Droin family has a winemaking history in Chablis dating back to 1620, making them one of the oldest domaines in the region. Benoît Droin represents the 14th generation and took over from his father, Jean-Paul, in 1999. Expect complex notes of green orchard fruit, citrus zest (lemon, grapefruit), wet stones, oyster shell and pronounced saline/iodine notes.
The 2023 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru has a touch more expression than the Vaudésir. Orchard fruit, a light smoky scent, and a hint of petrichor develop in the glass. The palate is well balanced on the entry and quite powerful. Yet, I find the finish just missing some of the detail and mineralité of its peers and indeed, some of Droin's Premier Crus.
