Chablis Grand Cru Valmur

Chablis, Burgundy, France

Centrally located among Chablis’ cluster of seven Grands Crus on the right bank of the Serein river, Valmur is one of the prime Chardonnay-producing vineyards in the Chablis region, its long-aged, terroir-focused wines giving many of the best whites of the Côte d’Or a run for their money.

A medium to large cru Valmur covers 10.5ha of vines with mostly ideal, sun-catching south and south-west exposure. A small area of the vineyard facing northwest, however. Here longer ripening time and better retention of acidity produce fresher Chardonnay fruit. This contrast is also reflected in the vineyard’s soils, which are thin, white and classically Kimmeridgian towards the top and deep, brown with more clay closer to the river. This contributes to a certain duality of character in Valmur Chardonnay – a sense of freshness but also sun-drenched richness – which has made the cru a favourite of many Chardonnay enthusiasts. Undoubtedly the finest and most sought-after examples of Valmur Chablis Grand Cru are made by Domaine François Raveneau.
