Samuel Billaud is a revered figure in Chablis who founded his eponymous label in 2009 following his departure from the family-owned Domaine Billaud-Simon. He is widely recognized for his exacting and precise winemaking methods, yielding wines that are both refined and full of expression. This particular release comes from the Premier Cru ‘Les Fourneaux’, situated on the eastern border of Chablis near the village of Fleys. The Chardonnay-based wines from this vineyard are known for their ripe, tropical flavours, accompanied by a pronounced minerality.
The 2022 Chablis Les Fourneaux 1er Cru has a slightly more austere bouquet than Billaud`s other Premier Crus. crushed stone, smoke and touches of grilled walnut. Again, this has superb delineation. The palate is taut and fresh, quite sapid and lively. If I must quibble, it doesn`t deliver the knockout complexity on the finish like the other cuvées. Still, this is a superb Fourneaux. - Neil Martin
