Situated on the Pomerol plateau, between Vieux-Chateaux Certan and Pétrus, Château Certan de May is a 5-hectare property currently managed by legendary winemaker Jean-Luc Barreau. The vineyard is planted to Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, which grow on a combination of clay and gravel soils. Since the 2013 vintage, Certan de May has been crafted under the expertise of renowned consultant Jean-Claude Berrouet, long-time winemaker at Petrus. Significant investment in the estate has started to reflect in the wine’s character. The blend consists of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.
"A step in the right direction." Those were my sentiments toward the 2021 Certan de May from barrel. Now in bottle, the nose is disappointing, missing fruit intensity and for want of a better word, just a bit anonymous, showing only touches of autumn leaves and earth. The palate is thankfully better, with more depth and fruit concentration than I might have expected. The acidity is well-judged with good body and no herbaceousness toward the finish. Perhaps the aromatics were just closed on the day? Jury`s out, but I remain open-minded and keep my fingers crossed for next time. - Neil Martin

Chateau Certan de May

Chateau Certan de May

Situated on the prized central plateau of Pomerol, Château Certan de May is situated adjacent to two other world famous Right Bank properties - Vieux Château Certan and La Fleur-Pétrus. The vineyards are characterised by the mix of clay and gravel typical of the commune and the winemaking has a focus on concentration and power. Michel Rolland was consulting in the cellar until 2012 when Jean-Claude Berrouet took over.

The vineyard is planted with 70% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon with vines averaging around 50 years of age. Wines are fermented for between four and six weeks before around 18 months ageing in oak barrels, around 40% of which are new.
