Caymus produced its inaugural vintage in 1972, yet the Wagner family-owned property in Rutherford had been cultivating grapevines since the 1940s. Initially, these grapes were supplied to other Napa Valley producers. It was not until Chuck Wagner, at the age of 19, decided to assist his parents in founding a winery on their ranch. Caymus Vineyards remains under the ownership and operation of the Wagner family. While Caymus has earned its reputation primarily for Cabernet Sauvignon, they also craft a limited quantity of Zinfandel, a cherished choice of the late Caymus co-founder, Charlie Wagner Sr. Zinfandel is a varietal with the potential to yield exceptional wines in Napa Valley. Caymus` robust interpretation of this wine is well-suited for pairing with rich dishes and cheeses. It also complements more casual fare, such as pizza and barbecue.
