Quintarelli Alzero 2015 is an appassimento-style wine made from Bordeaux grape varieties by the estate of the legendary Giuseppe Quintarelli in the Valpolicella region of Veneto. Produced in the same style as Quintarelli`s prized Amarone, the sought-after Alzero uses Cabernet Sauvignon (40%), Cabernet Franc (40%) and Merlot (20%) grapes which are air-dried for around three months before undergoing fermentation. The wine is then matured for around the same amount of time as the estate`s Amarone, first in French oak, then in larger Slavonian oak casks. The 2015 Alzero is available here in magnum format. "The 2015 Cabernet Alzero is loaded with varietal character, bursting from the glass with a dark blend of black fruits, savoury herbs, pencil lead and crushed stone. This is velvety smooth, with juicy acidity to balance and a core of mineral-tinged red and blue fruits complemented by confectionary spice. It leaves the palate reeling with youthful tension as hints of blood orange swirl under an air of violet inner florals. Dusty tannins resonate throughout. Quintarelli Giuseppe

The Quintarelli estate in the northern Veronese village of Negrar dates back to 1924 and was founded by Bepe’s father, Silvio. Bepe himself took over in the 1950s, orchestrating a quality revolution through his meticulous work in the vineyard and his uncompromising practices in the cellar. The result was wines of such hedonistic deliciousness that they became some of the most sought-after in Italy; those made before Bepe’s death in 2012 especially so.

At the still family-run estate, Bepe’s legacy continues through his daughter, Fiorenza, along with her husband, Giampaolo, and their children. The core range of wines are those made in the appassimiento style (ie, with partially sun-dried grapes): the Valpolicella Superiore, Amarone, Rosso del Bepi (essentially an Amarone, but released instead of the Amarone in ‘lesser’ vintages) and Recioto. The Amarone, only released in exceptional years, is matured for fully seven years in old Slavonian oak before release. An Amarone Riserva sees 10 years.
