Viñedo Chadwick and Viña Errázuriz
A True Chilean Masterpiece
Viñedo Chadwick is a masterpiece, part of the prestigious Viñedos Familia Chadwick group, founded by Eduardo Chadwick—also behind iconic wineries like Seña and Viña Errázuriz. Accolades are endless for this sensational wine; it is the epitome of ‘old world’ grandeur with a nod to Bordeaux royalty but is very proud of its Chilean DNA as Vinous notes, “Among Chile’s iconic wines, Viñedo Chadwick has carved out a unique place for elegance and intensity…a finessed Bordeaux-oriented red with the plush tannins of Maipo…Beautiful.” Its journey has been a fascinating one, back in 2004 at the Berlin tasting, Viñedo Chadwick 2000 was picked top, in a blind tasting by some of the wine industries finest palates, beating First Growths from Bordeaux and Super Tuscans from Italy. Crafted from a tiny 15-hectare plateau in the D.O of Puente Alto, which is renowned the world over for its first-class Cabernet Sauvignon, the small vineyard is on a high (650m) flat terrace at the foot of the mighty Andes, and only 4km away from the River Maipo. Within this natural amphitheatre the vines experience textbook growing conditions; warm springs and a long cool summer give the grapes perfect hang time. Refreshing breezes from the Andes and cool nights, lock in the kaleidoscopic aromatics, freshness, and acidity into the small berries.
The Chadwick family honour the memory of the late Don Alfonso Chadwick who fist purchased the estate in 1945 to indulge his love of wine and polo, having captained the Chilean team for many years. Over the decades that followed this romantic story has many twists of fate, which culminated in Eduardo asking his grandfather for permission to convert his beloved polo field into a vineyard – not just to honour him, but also to give the estate its fine wine destiny. Viñedo Chadwick was honoured with the distinction of “Wine Legend” by Decanter magazine, sitting it alongside hallowed names such as Petrus, Lafite, Margaux and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, who have also received this impressive award.
Las Pizarras and Don Max—two flagship wines from Viña Errázuriz—also reflect the founding philosophy of Don Maximiano Errázuriz: “From the best land, the best wine.”
