Thorne and Daughters Tin Soldier 2022 is a full-bodied, single-vineyard orange wine from the Franschhoek region of South Africa. Tin Soldier is an intriguing release made from Sémillon Gris, a lesser-known variant of the Sémillon grape which has a pinkish-grey colour. The grapes are sourced from an old vineyard in Franschhoek. The juice is fermented with wild yeasts in old oak barrels, and the wine is aged on its lees for an extended period, which contributes to its depth and texture. Producer note on the 2022 vintage. "The wine shows aromas of ripe apricot, Thai basil, nutmeg and toasted pistachio, redolent of baklava. Over the past couple of years, we have dialled the ripeness up a notch, making for a more complete and `grown-up` wine. The interplay between savoury and sweet is a key point of interest in Tin Soldier, and makes for a subtle and engaging wine. The palate has a fresh and salty olive brine quality to compliment richer bitter citrus tones."
- The 2022 Semillon Tin Soldier spends 7-10 days on the skins for around half the blend, less than the previous vintage, pushing for a little more ripeness, aged in used Burgundy barrels. This is very pure on the nose: yellow plum, wild peach and a touch of Anjou pear. Wonderful delineation. The palate is taut on the entry with notes of pear and nectarine, linear in style, with ample depth on the slightly oily-textured finish. Very good length. Excellent.
