Sine Qua Non Entre Chien et Loup 2015 is a full-bodied, barrel-aged white blend from the iconic Sine Qua Non winery in the Central Coast region of California. Established by husband-and-wife team Manfred and Elaine Krankl in Ventura County in 1994, Sine Qua Non specialises in Rhône-style red and white blends which have developed a cult following among critics and California wine lovers alike. From year to year, Manfred Krankl sources fruit from a wide variety of growers, meaning that the winery`s output is frequently changes. The 2015 Entre Chien et Loup is a blend of 44% Chardonnay, 40% Roussanne, 8% Petite Manseng and 8% Viognier and was matured in a combination of concrete eggs, stainless steel, and used and new French oak barrels. "It opens with a positively electric nose of ripe apricots, pink grapefruit and green mango with notions of candied ginger, honeycomb, allspice and baking bread. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a wonderfully satiny texture and incredible freshness, cutting through the dense tropical and stone fruit layers, finishing with epic length and many layers of savoury and spice notions." Wine Advocate, 2017
The 2015 White Wine Lightmotif opens with a huge nose of apricot, peach pit, honey, chamomile and herbs. Ample and luscious on the palate, with tremendous depth, the 2015 is terrific today, even though it is still recovering from its recent bottling. I would give it a few years to settle down. The Sine Qua Non whites always need time in bottle, and that is very much the case here as well. In 2015, the low yields produced a white that is quite intense, even by Sine Qua Non standards. The blend is 40% Chardonnay, 40% Roussanne, 8% Petite Manseng and 8% Viognier. - Antonio Galloni - Two more whites, albeit very different in style, completed the lineup. The 2015 White Wine Entre Chien et Loup from Sine Qua Non, a blend of 40% Chardonnay, 40% Roussanne, 8% Petite Manseng and 2% Viognier, has an enticing nose that expresses the Roussanne with style. Exuberant scents of apricot, kerosene, chamomile and chai blossom from the nose. The palate is intense but balanced and perfectly controlled, quite spicy with grilled walnuts and smoke, and sports fantastic definition on the persistent finish. I am not familiar with Manfred Krankl’s whites (we don’t see them much on these shores), but this bottle made me want to investigate further.

Sine Qua Non

Sine Qua Non

The wines of Sine Qua Non need little introduction. Mould breaking, iconoclastic, visionary are just some of the descriptors invoked when critics and wine lovers discuss this unique winery. Based in Ventura, north of LA, the wines of Sine Qua Non regularly notch up perfect scores from critics while the waiting list for a direct allocation is well over ten years.

Founded by Manfred and Elaine Krankl in the early 1990s, the duo swiftly gained attention from wine lovers and critics for their superb Rhône blend wines, quirky labels and uncompromising approach in the vineyard and cellar. The winery has experimented with producing Oregon Pinot Noir, dessert wines and an array of quirky single varietal reds and whites, but generally revert to producing the wines for which they are most famous - Grenache and Syrah. The wines are generally big and bold, but those who like things cranked up to eleven should look no further than Manfred's "extended barrel ageing" program.
