Domaine de la Romanée-Conti – or simply DRC – is the iconic Burgundy estate that produces some of the most exclusive and sought-after wines in the world. The domaine has a fascinating heritage that goes all the way back to the 16th century, when it was farmed by the Benedictine monks of Saint-Vivant de Vergy. Only grand cru wines are produced here, including this Richebourg, made from a 3.51-hectare parcel. This release is from the 2016 vintage, presented in a magnum. The wine reveals an enticing nose of rose petals, strawberries, wildflowers and cacao nibs. On the palate, this is a full-bodied expression, boasting velvety tannins and a persistent finish.
The 2016 Richebourg Grand Cru was picked on September 23–24 at 24hL/ha. It is much more intellectual and, you might argue, more challenging on the nose. Initially it feels a little green, not through underripeness but due to a stemmy element that is not quite as well enmeshed with the fruit. This seems to dissipate with time, and after two or three minutes it evolves an extraordinarily complex mélange of red and black fruit (more the latter), briar, rose petals, crushed stone and just a touch of seaweed. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannin, not as silky as the Romanée-Saint-Vivant, and a little more angular and masculine by comparison. This is one of the most saline Richebourgs that I have encountered from the domaine. Clearly a wine that is going to require a decade in bottle to really find its groove. Compelling, but not the most straightforward Richebourg in the pack. Then again, don’t we all like a puzzle? 868 cases produced. Tasted at Corney & Barrow’s annual in-bottle tasting in London. - Neil Martin

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti

Domaine de la Romanee-Conti

Words do not do justice to this legendary Burgundian producer. Situated in the commune of Vosne-Romanée, Domaine de la Romanée Conti (DRC) is considered by many to be the finest producer in the world. Co-owned by the Villaine and Leroy families, DRC produces only Grand Cru wines - some of the most sought after and ageworthy in Burgundy - from key grape varieties, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. These include six reds: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Romanée-St-Vivant, Échezeaux and Grands Échezeaux, and one white wine, Le Montrachet.

Run by co-directors Aubert de Villaine and Henri-Frédéric Roch for many years, the domaine is now entering a new chapter under new leadership. The domaine consists of 25 hectares of meticulously tended vineyards and includes some of the greatest terroirs in Burgundy.
