The `2015 Giuseppe Quintarelli Recioto della Valpolicella` unmistakably embodies a wine made from dried grapes, evident in the notes of caramelization and dehydration. The nose reveals a remarkably clean profile and abundant presence of exquisite, dried fruits, including dates, raisins, apricots, figs, and an array of delightful nuances. Despite a seemingly modest acidity level, the sweetness of this wine finds balance through its tannic structure, preventing it from becoming cloying.
Dark ruby with purple hues, the 2015 Recioto della Valpolicella Classico is youthfully coy, requiring coaxing to evolve in the glass. Swirling and time bring forward a more savory bouquet as exotic spices, balsamic tones and hints of incense emerge, followed by dried blueberries and violet pastille. This is pure seduction, like silk draped across the palate, revealing depths of ripe black cherry and wild berry fruits, enhanced by a core of blood orange. Even at 70 grams-per-liter of residual sugar, it's hard to perceive the 2015 as a sweet wine. Its zesty acidity adds harmony, closing with a pleasantly bitter tinge and gently grippy tannins that frame the experience so well.

Quintarelli Giuseppe

Quintarelli Giuseppe

The Quintarelli estate in the northern Veronese village of Negrar dates back to 1924 and was founded by Bepe’s father, Silvio. Bepe himself took over in the 1950s, orchestrating a quality revolution through his meticulous work in the vineyard and his uncompromising practices in the cellar. The result was wines of such hedonistic deliciousness that they became some of the most sought-after in Italy; those made before Bepe’s death in 2012 especially so.

At the still family-run estate, Bepe’s legacy continues through his daughter, Fiorenza, along with her husband, Giampaolo, and their children. The core range of wines are those made in the appassimiento style (ie, with partially sun-dried grapes): the Valpolicella Superiore, Amarone, Rosso del Bepi (essentially an Amarone, but released instead of the Amarone in ‘lesser’ vintages) and Recioto. The Amarone, only released in exceptional years, is matured for fully seven years in old Slavonian oak before release. An Amarone Riserva sees 10 years.
