Comte Armand Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1999 is a full-bodied Burgundy red wine from the Premier Cru climat of Clos des Epeneaux in the Pommard appellation of the Côte de Beaune. Clos des Epeneaux is one of Pommard`s most prestigious Premier Cru vineyards, located at the base of the Côte d`Or escarpment. It is a walled vineyard, planted entirely to Pinot Noir, and a monopole of Comte Armand, which uses most of the grapes to make this Clos des Epeneaux Premier Cru wine. "A genuinely brilliant nose that is at once extravagant and highly expressive reflects intensely earthy and spicy aromas that remain completely primary before giving way to opulently rich, round and notably sweet medium full-bodied flavours that deliver flat out incredible length on the mocha, velvet and mouth coating finish. Despite the higher than normal yields, this is really quite concentrated, seamless and exquisitely harmonious. In sum, this is a Clos des Epeneaux that should age for years to come, particularly in magnum format. Bravo!" Burghound, 2008
The 1999 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru comes from an era I did not particularly like for the estate. This comes across smudged on the nose and distinctly lacks freshness, marred by some VA. The palate is full-bodied and muscular, like a Burgundy aping Bordeaux, static and missing tension on the finish. It just never takes off. Tasted at the Clos des Epeneaux vertical in London. - Neil Martin
