Poggio al Tesoro Sondraia 2019 is a full-bodied Supertuscan red wine from the Bolgheri sub-region of Tuscany, central Italy. A blend ofCabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, Sondraia is aged in French oak barrels for 18 months, which confers an extraordinary full-bodied texture with flavours of cherry, plum and blackberry fruit, chocolate and baking spices. The tannins are firm, but well-integrated, ensuring very good ageing potential.
The 2019 Bolgheri Superiore Sondraia is a powerful, rather somber wine. In this tasting, the 2019 stands out for its more extracted style and stronger oak imprint, neither of which seem to allow the wine to show at its best. Dark red-toned fruit, spice, tobacco, espresso and torrefaction notes build in the glass. I find the finish a touch abrupt and astringent.
