Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a Second Growth estate situated within the Pauillac appellation. The property covers approximately 89 hectares, and it was acquired by Champagne Louis Roederer in 2006. This release is from the 2001 vintage, a blend composed of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 14% Petit Verdot. The nose suggests ripe wild berries, peppermint, toast and spices. The palate is delicate and silky-smooth, but full of energy, leading to a very long finish.
The 2001 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a vintage that I was surprised to discover I had not tasted for a decade. Showing light bricking on the rim, it has an open nose of brambly red berry fruit intermixed with cola, sage and tobacco, the relative higher proportion of Merlot rendering a different Grand Vin compared to nowadays. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy, ripe and now quite melted tannins. Savory in style, this is becoming quite a Saint-Julien-like Pauillac, hints of dried blood developing toward the finish as secondary notes become more pronounced. This is now reaching its maturity, although it has the substance to last another 20-some years. - Neil Martin - The 2001 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a vintage that I was surprised to discover I had not tasted for a decade. Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Also known by the full name of Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, the estate is celebrated for its Grand Vin, a Pauillac Second Growth which is a wonderfully vibrant red with well-structured, characterful tannins. Seen as one of the benchmark producers from Pauillac and well-known for wines that offer beautifully ripe fruit, sumptuous texture and deep savoury complexity.

With currently 74 hectares of vineyards in production, 50% is used to produce the first wine, whilst the remaining 50% - from younger vines- goes into producing the estate's second wine, Pichon Comtesse Réserve (known as Réserve de la Comtesse prior to 2017). Key varieties are the classic red Bordeaux grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
