Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is one of Pauillac`s finest Second Growth estates, a highly regarded and consistent Bordeaux producer. This release is the 1999 vintage of its Grand Vin, a blend composed of 47% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 7% Petit Verdot. Expect notes of plums, espresso, blackberries, tobacco, cassis, smoke, dried black fruit, and soft raisins.
The 1999 Pichon-Lalande has an attractive bouquet of raspberry, wild strawberry and light floral scents, although it is missing the mineralité and terroir expression of the best vintages (including the 2016 that I tasted alongside). The palate is rounded on the entry, with supple tannin, gentle grip and a note of licorice infusing the red fruit. There is a pastille-like quality to this 1999, although my criticism is that at 20 years of age it is missing the essence of Comtesse. Balanced, but does not have much to say. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the estate. - Neil Martin

Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Also known by the full name of Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, the estate is celebrated for its Grand Vin, a Pauillac Second Growth which is a wonderfully vibrant red with well-structured, characterful tannins. Seen as one of the benchmark producers from Pauillac and well-known for wines that offer beautifully ripe fruit, sumptuous texture and deep savoury complexity.

With currently 74 hectares of vineyards in production, 50% is used to produce the first wine, whilst the remaining 50% - from younger vines- goes into producing the estate's second wine, Pichon Comtesse Réserve (known as Réserve de la Comtesse prior to 2017). Key varieties are the classic red Bordeaux grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
