With a rich history that spans seven centuries, Château Pape Clément is one of the oldest Grands Crus in the entire Bordeaux region. The first vines were planted in the 13th century by Bertrand de Goth, who went on to become Pope Clement V. Situated in the Pessac-Léognan appellation in Graves, the 36-hectare estate is on a combination of gravel-sand and clay-limestone soils, with a chalky subsoil rich in iron. The 2020 vintage is aromatic, deep, dark-fruited, and with that characteristic tobacco scent that is always found in Pape Clément. The palate is fresh with crisp fruit, displaying concentration and structure. Drink from 2025-2050.
The 2020 Pape Clément has a comparatively light, rather "aloof" bouquet that demands rigorous coaxing in the glass. This might be going through a dumb phase. The palate is very elegant and harmonious, exerting insistent grip and finely judged acidity with a vivacious, persistent finish. It's wonderful, but it needs time for the aromatics to fully open.
