Located within the Margaux appellation, Château Palmer was formerly a part of the D’Issan estate and derives its name from Major General Charles Palmer of the British Army, who acquired the property in 1814. Uncommon for the Médoc, Château Palmer typically incorporates an equal measure of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in its blend, complemented by a small proportion of Petit Verdot.

Château Palmer is a Third Growth estate committed to organic and biodynamic practices since 2017. The 2004 vintage is noted for its robust structure, featuring prominent flavours of black fruit, subtle spices, and earthy undertones. This magnum offers an opportunity to explore the evolution of a classic Bordeaux, reflecting the unique terroir of its origins.

- The 2004 Palmer is not one of my favorite vintages of that decade, though this is one of the best bottles. It lacks intensity and harmony on the nose, with prominent tobacco/cigar smoke scents and just a hint of boot polish. The palate is medium-bodied and spicy on the entry, with a touch of licorice that tapers toward the off-dry finish. I would broach bottles in the next three to four years. Tasted at the Lia's Wings/book dinner at Medlar restaurant.

Chateau Palmer

Chateau Palmer

Château Palmer is a 3ème Cru Classé property and is one of the most celebrated estates in the Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, renowned for producing rich and opulent wines with exceptional longevity. The 55 hectare estate is characterised by its mixture of fine and sandy gravels, together with clay soils. The key grape varieties are old vine Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, all farmed biodynamically, resulting in superbly elegant, velvety wines with a wonderful capacity to age and evolve in bottle.

In addition to the first wine, Château Palmer, the estate produces a second red from specific plots, Alter Ego de Palmer. Created to be as equally terroir-driven and expressive as the Grand Vin, the Alter Ego is supple, rounded and more approachable in youth.
