Mestres is one of the oldest producers of Cava with a history that dates back as far as 1312. They bottled their first sparkling in 1925 and they still use the traditional native grape varieties and winemaking techniques favoured by their ancestors. The 2004 Clos Damiana is a blend of 60% Xarel-lo, 20% Macabeo and 20% Parellada, fermented and matured in chestnut barrique for one year before bottling, secondary fermentation and maturation for 160 months. Straw yellow in colour, this is a supremely elegant sparkling wine with subtly autolytic notes of baked bread and smoke, set above a core of deeply expressive citrus and tropical fruit, griddled nuts and honey. Rich, svelte, smooth and fabulously dry, this is Cava of the very finest calibre.
