Nestled in the heart of the Mount Veeder AVA, the Mayacamas vineyard finds its place above the fog line, enjoying a unique climate characterized by cooler days and warmer nights compared to the Napa Valley floor. The vines thrive in well-drained soils of moderate fertility, leading to an environment where they undergo a beneficial stress that yields a limited quantity of concentrated fruit. This distinctive setting imbues the grapes with a significant tannic framework, contributing to the wine`s structure and complexity. The 1990 vintage in California is widely considered to be outstanding, and it was particularly favourable for red wines like Cabernet Sauvignon. The growing conditions during that year led to wines of exceptional quality, balance, and ageing potential.
Sweet tobacco, mint, leather, autumn leaves, cedar, smoke and mint are some of the signatures of the 1990 Cabernet Sauvignon. At twenty- five years of age, the 1990 remains youthful and surprisingly deep. Although the bouquet shows lovely signs of maturity, the 1990 appears to have enough depth to drink well for another decade, perhaps longer, even if time is not likely to make it a materially better wine than it is today. Readers should expect a classic, Old World Napa Cabernet with some imperfections, including a touch of brett that will disturb some tasters more than others.
