Linkwood
Built in 1821, the first spirit ran off the still at Linkwood in 1824, shortly after the 1823 Excise Act was codified into law. The distillery was torn down and rebuilt in 1874 by William Brown, son of the founder Peter Brown and eventually joined DCL's growing collection of distilleries in 1932 and production has continued uninterrupted ever since. A new distillery building was built in the early 1970s and ran stills concurrently with the older plant until the mid 1980s. Six new wash-backs were added in 2012 pushing capacity to over five millions litres a year.
Flavour-wise, this a fresh, vibrant single malt in youth with notes of cereal, honey and green apple on the nose. More mature examples are prized for their balanced complexity and rich mouth feel. Independent bottlings abound, with Gordon and MacPhail offering a great variety of single cask editions, while owners Diageo have bottled Linkwood as part of both their Flora and Fauna and Classic Malts range.
