Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion, a small property spanning 7.6 hectares, has become one of Bordeaux`s hottest names, boasting a stylish new winery designed by Philippe Starck. Winemaker Guillaume Pouthier, previously associated with Chapoutier in the Rhône, brings his expertise, often utilizing up to half whole bunch fermentation. The 2021 vintage is a blend composed of 40% Cabernet Franc, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 25% Merlot, aged in 70% new barriques, 20% new 18-hl foudres, and 10% amphoras. This wine stands out with its remarkable tannin texture, seamlessly melding with the wine to impart softness and finesse. Medium-bodied, it showcases a solid fruit core, with captivating, focused notes of cassis, blackberry, and crushed stones. Available en magnum.
The 2021 Les Carmes Haut-Brion was one of the best wines of the vintage when I tasted from barrel. This contains 49% whole-bunch (a slightly higher figure than Guillaume Pouthier gave me during en primeur). The barrel-aging has what Pouthier called a "white toasting", very light, so that you don`t smell the oak (70% new). It has a complex bouquet, quite open with mainly red fruit, cedar and hints of pressed violet. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled, unobtrusive tannins that imbue this Pessac with a sense of symmetry. It possesses thrilling salinity and is a little granular in texture on the finish, completing perhaps the most impressive wine of this challenging season. - Neil Martin

Chateau Haut-Brion

Chateau Haut-Brion

Grapes are thought to have been grown on the Haut-Brion estate in Pessac-Léognan since the Roman era, while the first recorded mention of the property is in 1423. The wine has had a long, illustrious history and is famously mentioned by Samuel Pepys in his diary of 1663. Nowadays, Haut Brion is considered by many to be one of the finest wines in the world and was ranked in the First Growth category during the 1855 classification of Bordeaux wines.

Renowned for its first wine (40% of production), Haut Brion, the estate also produces a spectacular second wine from young vines, Le Clarence de Haut Brion, in addition to a white, Château Haut-Brion Blanc, the Clarendelle branded wines and a second white, La Clarté de Haut Brion (which also takes grapes from La Mission). Spanning 53 hectare, the estate is planted to 50 hectares red varieties and 3 hectares white. The reds produced are beautifully balanced and complex, often around 14% abv and made from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, typically aged in 80% new oak. The Haut-Brion Blanc meanwhile is a Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc blend, produced in small quantities and aged in a mix of new and one-year oak.
